Two weeks ago, I took my first yoga class in years. And it was a m a z i n g. When it comes to fitness classes, I usually stick with what I know – barre and pilates. However, a few stressful weeks at work led me to look into yoga classes as I hear that they are a great way to relieve stress and rejuvenate your body/soul.
My best friend and I spent the day looking for yoga studios around the city for the perfect one. For those of you that live in San Francisco, you know that there are so many yoga studios to choose from. I had heard good things about Yoga to the People over the years and suggested we check it out. You can take a look at their website hereย for class times and locations. If you don’t live in San Francisco, they also have locations in Berkeley, New York, Seattle, and Tempe!
The San Francisco location is smack dab in the Mission district on Mission and 16th. I would definitely suggest taking a girlfriend with you to this class since it’s not really the “safest” part of town. The studio is on the fifth floor of the building, which means you are going to get a nice little pre-workout walking up five narrow flights of stairs. Once you reach the top, you’re asked to remove your shoes. There are little cubbies inside the studio that you can put your personal belongings in and anything you don’t wish to have out on the floor with you.
Let me tell you – the view at the front of the class is amazing. We put our yoga mats right in front of the view. Excuse the fogged up windows – the studio gets hot from all that body heat!
All classes run for an hour and the instructors can change from week to week even if you go at the same time. All of their classes are Vinyasa style – meaning that they focus on synchronized breathing through the movements. I love this because the whole class becomes a flow of breathing and poses that become a dance of sorts. megabox hd pc Some of the poses we have done over the weeks are cat-cow stretches, sun salutations, and warrior poses. Once I get the hang of the proper form, I’ll be sure to post a blog about what I’ve learned so you can try these exercises at home! The class ends with the instructor hitting a Tibetan gong. This was my favorite part of the class – it felt so spiritual and was a great way to release all of the negative energy and stress that I’d had built up inside me.
And now.. the best part. Yoga to the People is a donation based class, which means they do not expect you to pay anything when you go. Of course, donations are highly encouraged as that’s how the studio stays open to provide to the people. I usually donate $10 a class. The instructor collects the donations at the end of the class in a box. The whole studio is so passionate about yoga and the benefits it provides to people. I love their positive energy and their desire to provide these classes to the community. I can’t say enough good things about what yoga has done for me mentally and spiritually since I incorporated it into my weekly fitness routine.

I actually borrowed a mat from a friend for my first class so of course after class, I asked Daniel if we could go buy me a new one. ๐ We found this one at Ross. They have a great selection of yoga mats for super affordable prices. This cutie of a mat was only $8!
